Debutant Prasidh Krishna took four wickets while opener Shikhar Dhawan made 98 to help India defeat England in the first ODI, at the MCA Stadium on Tuesday. The home side have also taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chasing a target of 318 runs to win, England got off to a brilliant start as openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow added 135 runs for the opening partnership from 14.2 overs. Roy played well for his 35 ball 56 which included 7 fours and a six. Bairstow was the top scorer for England with his 66 ball 94 with 6 fours and 7 sixes. Despite a brilliant opening partnership, England fell apart after Roy was dismissed by debutant Prasidh Krishna. Eoin Morgan made 22 while Moeen Ali scored 30 runs. Prasidh was the pick of the bowlers for India as he finished with the figures of 4-54 from 8.1 overs. Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar shared 2 wickets each while Krunal Pandya bagged a wicket.
Earlier, England won the toss and invited India to bat first. India finished on 317/5 with Dhawan top scoring for the side. Dhawan made 98 runs with 11 fours and 2 sixes. Dhawan added 64 runs for the first wicket with Rohit Sharma. Rohit made 28. Dhawan then added 105 runs for second wicket with skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli played well for his 60 ball 56. KL Rahul (62) and Krunal Pandya (58) put on an unbeaten 112 runs for 6th wicket as India posted a strong total on the board. Ben Stokes picked up 3 wickets for England while Mark Wood bagged 2.
