Mitchell Starc’s 5 wicket haul dismantles New Zealand

Australia defeated New Zealand by 86 runs to take the top spot in the points table of ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Mitchell Starc picked up 5 wickets while Alex Carey smashed a 72 ball 71 after a rare top order failure of Australia.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. Australia lost David Warner for 16, Aaron Finch for 8 and Steve Smith for 5 runs. Usman Khawaja along with Marcus Stoinis added 35 runs for the fourth wicket before Stoinis was caught by Latham off Neesham. Glenn Maxwell didn’t last for long as he was caught and bowled by Neesham for 1 run. The wicketkeeper batsman Alex Carey joined Usman Khawaja in the middle as Australia were struggling at 92/5. The due then added 107 runs for sixth wicket before Carey got out to Kane Williamson. Alex Carey scored 71 runs off 72 balls which included 11 fours. Usman Khawaja made 88 runs from 129 balls with 5 fours. Pat Cummins remained unbeaten on a 19 ball 23 as Australia finished on 243/9 from 50 overs.

Trent Boult was the star with the ball for New Zealand as he completed a hattrick in the last over of the Australian innings. Boult got the wickets of Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff and finished with the figures of 4-51 from his 10 overs.

New Zealand in reply never really looked in the game as they kept losing wickets regularly. Skipper Kane Williamson was the top scorer with 40 runs. Ross Taylor made 30 while opener Martin Guptill made 20 runs. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers for Australia as he picked up 5 wickets and finished with the figures of 5-26. Jason Behrendorff picked up 2 wickets.
